Things to draw, step by step

What to draw when you have no ideas

  • Something on the table right now: a cup, a spoon, a piece of fruit.
  • Your pet, or the pet you wish you had.
  • An animal with a job: a cat chef, a dog firefighter, an owl teacher.
  • Your house, then the house you would build if you could.
  • A monster made of shapes: one circle, two triangles and as many legs as you like.
  • The view from a window.

What to draw for 10 year olds

Older kids often want a challenge. Try a favorite animal with all four legs and a background, a comic strip with three boxes, or an object from real life drawn while looking at it.

Questions parents ask

What should I draw when I have no ideas?

Pick the closest object and draw it, or pick an animal and give it a job: a frog that is a chef, a bear on a bike. Small, silly prompts are easier to start than "draw anything."

What can a 10 year old draw?

Most 10 year olds are ready for drawings with more parts: an animal with all four legs, a house with a garden, a character from a book they like. Shading and drawing from real life are good next steps.
